I was completely derailed this morning by a last minute change to my schedule, and then again by the sight of some overgrown grass verges.
The second half of that sentence is of the highest import.
The grass is now so overgrown in many parts of town where I live, that I felt compelled to write to my council to ask why they’ve stopped mowing the grass. *shakes fist at the sky*
(Don’t come at me with ‘No Mow May’ because that horse has well and truly bolted now that it’s mid-June).
My complaint about overgrown grass verges may well be the most middle-aged thing I’ve ever done and you know what, I’m here for this ‘mature’ (cranky) stage-of-life behaviour.
As a cub reporter, sitting in sleepy parish council meetings listening to endless arguments about the positioning of street lamps, I remember thinking ‘Who cares? You’re all SO BORING.’
Yes, yes we are. And vive la change!
I’ll keep you posted on the grass verges because I’m sure you’re gripped - GRIPPED - by this micro-soap opera.
Anyway, I’m also here because a writer on Substack shared a Banksy quote in Notes this morning.
It was: “If you get tired, learn to rest, not to quit.”
Sometimes it’s easy to go ‘this isn’t working, I’m exhausted’, and throw all your dollies out of the pram, when all you really need to do is climb into the pram and have a nap.
It resonated hard, that I felt compelled to share and then look up more wise words from the much-feted anonymous artist.
Another quote that jumped out at me (he has tons from his book Wall and Piece) was this: “I’d been painting rats for three years before someone said, ‘That’s clever, it’s an anagram of art’, and I had to pretend I’d known that all along.”
Belly laughs because honestly, do any of us really know what we’re doing?
This is the no-rule rule:
Do what you want, create what you want to create, write what you want to write and then let others interpret it in their own way.
And if you’re so inclined, pretend like Banksy, that it was the goal all along.
Have a great week!
