Meet Larry. He’s a gecko I met in the Seychelles.
Larry was ballsy. Larry knew how to make bold colours work for him. Larry was fast.
I quickly began to admire Larry.
He always presented his best self, knew where he was going, and walked to the beat of his own drum.
Green geckos are generally quite shy but Larry always seemed to have time to check in and see how I was doing.
One morning, I woke up to see him languishing in the middle of the wall directly opposite me. I said hello. He said hello back (probably) and then scuttled off towards the ceiling.
He was a great roommate. Polite. Tidy. Reliable.
After a day out on the ocean or one of the other islands in the Alphonse atoll, I looked forward to seeing Larry.
For a gecko, he was extraordinarily chilled. He made me realise that I needed to take more time to do, well, nothing. To just hang. Take a breath. But to do it in style.
The beauty of a break from routine is that you start to remember all those wise life nuggets that you already know. Given a chunk of time away from life admin, they manage to land fresh in your brain. The ‘a-ha’ moments start to flow soon after.
Don’t sweat the small stuff. Take time to smell the roses. Appreciate what you have. Don’t look back. Regret nothing. Hope for everything. This too will pass. You are worthy. You are loved.
Larry helped gift me those moments. And while there are no Larrys in southeast Essex his legacy lives on.
As I plan my week, and in an attempt to remember all that beautiful gecko wisdom, I’m going to do all I can to enjoy the precious moments and appreciate the little things - and also to paint the world in brighter colours.
This post is a good start.
