Let's take a cue from Oscar
Want to learn from the best? Here are this year's Best Original Screenplay nominations
The Oscar nominations were announced last week which means awards season is in full swing.
Who’s it going to be for Best Actor? Cillian Murphy for Oppenheimer? Best Actress? Maybe Emma Stone for Poor Things? Best Picture? Barbie? Ryan Gosling as Ken for Best Actor? Best Supporting Actress? Lily Gladstone for Killers of the Flower Moon?
Who knows!
What excites me most is the writing. I love reading other people’s screenplays and, arguably, the Best Original Screenplay Oscar nominations showcase the best of the best this year.
So dear scribe, today’s motivation is a glittering screenplay dump.
You can learn so much from reading other people’s work.
One thing I always notice is how spare successful scripts are. I read a script and then go back to my work and attack everything with a meat cleaver.
Below are the five Academy Award nominations for this year’s Best Original Screenplay.
You may love them, you may hate them. You may even say: “Meh”. But get stuck in anyway.
Fade out.
Lisa
Maestro by Bradley Cooper and Josh Singer
The Holdovers by David Hemingson
May December by Samy Burch; Story by Samy Burch & Alex Mechanik
Anatomy of a Fall by Justine Triet and Arthur Harari
Past Lives by Celine Song - this was the only version I could find but it’s eminently readable.
Edit: the mailing list version was sent out with the wrong headline. Stories of shenanigans on Oscar night will be coming to you in a later post!
