How do we know if we’re good enough?
How do you find that certainty within you when you don’t really know if you can do the thing or not?
I’ve been thinking about this a lot recently but instead of wallowing in imposter syndrome - because as a writer and human that’s so easy to do - I’ve been trying to flip the script.
What if being good enough doesn’t really matter?
What is just getting on and doing is the secret?
Writing isn’t about perfection; it’s about connection. It’s about the flight, not the landing. It’s about putting your thoughts, your stories, your unique voice out there for the world to experience.
And the world needs all kinds of voices - not just the polished, perfect ones.
Think about the books and articles you love most. Chances are, they resonate with you not because they’re flawless, but because they’re real. That’s what makes writing powerful.
And guess what? Your words - my words - have that power, too.
Our journey as writers isn’t about meeting some external measure of success; it’s about growth, exploration and the joy of creating.
I saw the movie, Deadpool & Wolverine, at the weekend. Was it meaningful? I don’t know but it was certainly fabulous fun. All that counts is that I left the cinema laughing and with enough leftover popcorn for the following day’s beach snack.
When I find myself questioning if I’m good enough, I try to remind myself that every word I write is a step forward. Every syllable and consonant, every vowel and comma. They all add up to whatever it is I’m doing on this planet. They’re the ingredients in a recipe for a dish that I’m not entirely certain is the thing I set out to make.
But is it good enough?
Yeah, I reckon it is.
Have a great week!
Lisa
The photo of yours truly was taken on the airstrip of Alphonse Island, in the Seychelles. It’s a beautiful place but it was about 8am and already 4 gazillion degrees. Thankfully, you can’t see the insane amount of sweat and insect bites.
