Confessional.
Last weekend, a friend from overseas came to visit.
She’s the perfect house guest. Considerate, independent, happy to stay in, happy to go out. Loves to bake! Made the most insanely tasty loaf that I almost inhaled in one sitting. Honestly, a dream.
However, I was desperate to get some writing done. I had a very specific page count to hit and needed to find the space to do it.
I knew I could sequester myself away somewhere at home but didn’t want to look at the same four walls I stare at all week.
I decided to go out. Without her.
Now, even though I knew she was happy to be by herself for a few hours I felt a little guilty. She’d travelled thousands of miles and now here I was abandoning her to sit in a cafe and write.
But it was such a great session. I wrote loads, came up with new ideas and also ate a great writing snack - the humble pastel de nata. Heroic actions deserved a heroic treat, don’t you think?
Later, my friend and I went out for dinner and had a great evening, catching up on all the news and laughing into the small hours.
I almost didn’t make time for writing because she was visiting but I’m glad I did. Those three hours made all the difference. Progress was made because I’d prioritised my project. *pen drop*
So, do you have space to write this weekend?
And if not, how are you going to carve out the time? Because I guarantee you won’t regret it.
Happy writing!
Lisa
I love this! It’s a great reminder to stick with your promises to yourself. Also, spending a few hours exploring by yourself can be such a fabulous way to explore new places.
I'd been planning to book myself into to a week long retreat in the coming months (Prospect Street Writers House in Vermont) to try to finish a 2nd draft but I've learned they're not scheduling between February and May. Looking for something similarly priced in hopes of getting seven uninterrupted days.
