Sometimes you end up back where you started.
Not by design but by circumstance, I’m currently living in the same place where I grew up.
It absolutely wasn’t the plan but a curious thing has happened; I’ve started to draw inspiration from the town for my next writing project.
The novel I’m formulating is very much born out of a specific period from my younger years.
As I start to pull the pieces together, I find myself wandering the high street, the seafront, through the parks or suburbia looking for those nooks and crannies, landmarks, and memories that will form the backdrop to this story.
It’s a great way to keep moving forward mentally and physically when outlining a story, and a wonderful way to become unstuck if you’ve hit a wall with your writing.
I’m planning a long walk this weekend for research, as much as exercise and fresh air.
Who knows, out of an unplanned situation might come something rather wonderful.
What are you doing this weekend to inform your writing?
Lisa
PS: This week, I saw the rather magnificent Lust for Life gig, held in a converted church in Colchester. It inspired me to add Iggy Pop’s album to my walking playlist. All of the songs are so good but this is the one you probably know the best (from being used in the movie, Trainspotting). It really gets the blood racing!
