I’m deep in first draft mode.
Part of me wants to write a serious, weighty novel but the bigger part of me wants to write a funny book.
The comedy is winning out.
A few posts ago, in this Write to Know, I mentioned that I was veering towards a diary structure. I think that’s winning out too.
In summary, thus far, we have a vague wisp of a comedic diary.
What is this Bridget Jones?
No, it very much is not.
I’m writing a comedy novel with no romance. This book, I have decreed, will pass the Bechdel Test.
I think somewhere in the mix, there might be a mystery or a crime of sorts.
If this sounds like a stream of consciousness, it is.
Welcome to the process.
As I continue to wrestle with this new project, I’m going to leave you with this gem from Alain de Botton, who (ironically) wrote The Course of Love.
“To become a proper writer, you have to forgive yourself the catastrophe of the first draft.”
Wise, wise, wise.
Catastrophe, here I come!
